Effect of Vibration Acceleration on Interface Microstructure and Bonding Strength of Mg–Al Bimetal Produced by Compound Casting

Vibration was adopted to enhance the interface bonding of Mg–Al bimetal prepared by lost foam compound casting (LFCC) technique. The bimetallic composed three layers: layer I (Al3Mg2 and Mg2Si phases), II (Al12Mg17 III + δ-Mg eutectic structure). With increase in vibration acceleration, cooling rate increased, resulting decrease reaction duration that generates intermetallic compounds (IMCs) (including layers II) its thickness. On other hand, phase IMCs refined, distribution became more uniform with acceleration. Finally, shear strength continued 45.1 MPa when acceleration increased 0.9, which 40% higher than without vibration.
